becomes dangerous as a meteor slams to the ground and has injured over 1000 people. we have stunning video. >> streaking across an early morning sky, a burst of light and an explosion of sound. these unverified pictures appear to show a russian cities close shave with a meteorite. on the ground, people stunned and unsure of what they had seen were left staring at the thick trail. >> it lasted three, maybe four seconds. >> many were hurt by broken glass. windows popped out. this level of damage is rare, but media rights are -- meteors

are common but often burn up as they enter the world atmosphere. the closest reported pat -- meteor will make a path. >> can say there is no chance of it hitting the earth. >> in this part of russian, -- russia, it will be welcome news. scientists say it is not linked. it was a cosmic coincidence. >> quite the coincidence. rob roblin is talking with local nasa scientists about the asteroid and he will have more coming up tonight on 11 news at 5:00 and six o'clock. >> we are talking about things up in the air, but this is closer to the surface and not as dramatic.

we have a new weather system coming in and it promises to be a snow and rain producer. temperatures are definitely warm enough for rain. made-50 cost right now. 20 of sunshine. west virginia is seen rain shower activity. that will be moving east. probably not until the end of the afternoon or early evening hours. what will it do as far as snow is concerned? i will have more on that forecast coming up. >> the deadline to apply for john leopold's job ended about three minutes ago, and a number of local politicians are throwing their name in the ring. acting county executive john hammond is interested in filling in. other candidates include steven schuh, county counsel chair jerry walker, vice chair john

grasso, thomas angelis, and former maryland first lady kendel ehrlich. the county council will interview the candidates vote on february 21. john leopold resigned after being convicted of misconduct in office. there is no chance you will get a new trial with his request being rejected as the judge said it was a without merit. he can still collect his state and county pension. sentencing is scheduled for march 14. the i-team continues to cover -- uncovered new details about a training incident that put a training in a hospital. the instructor has been identified as 46-year-old william kern. investigators say he accidentally grabbed and fired his duty weapon during a training exercise. the university of maryland baltimore campus trainee took a

bullet to the head and remains in critical condition. officials say william kern is on medical suspension. four people are recovering from injuries they sustained at a traffic stop. the maryland state police super -- trooper tried to stop a vehicle at gaucher avenue, when a driver took off and ran a red light before slamming into individual cars. police are not saying what prompted him to flee or why he was pulled over. howard county man is arrested arrested for exposing himself to young girls. steven lerer exposed himself to a group of young girls according to officers inside of columbia mall wednesday night. an investigation is now under way to figure out if steven lerer flashed a pair of girls in

the parking lot of a movie theater earlier this year. * ravens running back ray rice says somebody used his name and photos on facebook to meet up with young girls. 11 news learned somebody created an imposter account under his name. he says he did not know about it until fans started sending messages to his real this book page. >> we had one girl that responded to this person, saying she was going to maryland live casino that evening, and one hour later he checked in on his facebook page at maryland live conceit of. >> facebook -- casino. >> facebook has removed the page. ray rice's publicist tells us he is concerned about his reputation and the safety of his fans. >> -- coming up, foster -- oscar

said. reeva steenkamp, a cover girl, lost to graduate, was set to give a valentine's day talk about empowering women. instead, her family spoke about her. >> she had her life cut short and she's with the angels. >> the world is used to seeing oscar pistorius as the fastest man on no legs, making histo, but now he is emotional, the keys and in jail. >> he will have to stay in jail until his bond hearing next week. questions were raised about mistaken identity, and is it possible that reeva steenkamp could have been mistaken for an intruder. police emphasize that that information did not come from them.

>> covering the nation, police confirmed the chart the names found in a burnt cabin in california are in fact christopher dorner. the identification was made through dental examination. the former lapd officer engaged in a deadly shootout with deputies before the cab and went out -- up in flames. he was on the run before police found him hiding in a remote cabin. >> now, your insta weather plus forecast with meteorologist john collins. >> another storm is coming in, but ahead of that, we are in great shape. the sun is out, and temperatures are in the mid-50's. in the west, we start to pick up clouds, and in the clouds there is some snow or rain depending on the temperature, that the air is drive.

garrett county has a few indications of sprinkles or snowflakes. with the storm approaching and presidents' day approaching, into the city we have had some big storms. 1958, 11.5 inches of snow. the 16th, 28.1 inches of snow in 2003. a couple of smaller amounts, less than 10 inches in 1893 and 1960 four back on the 17th and 18th, and on the 19th, 1979, 6.4 inches of snow. so, statistically, this is the hot time for big storms. i mentioned these warm temperatures. we are well into the mid-50's. bwi is 56 degrees. on the boardwalk, 52.

54 at frederick. 30's at oakland. 40 and frostburg. here are the clouds associated with the next weather disturbance coming in. mostly sunny conditions and it is a beautiful day so far. the cold front is coming in. the temperature starts to step back a little bit. a secondary cold front and a low pressure center. this comes through later today and tonight. as it comes through, that is when we begin to see the chance for some snow in the area, or maybe initially rain because we have to have temperatures down first before we can have snow. 54-59 today. we will begin to see an increase in clouds, and by the evening, a be some rain or snow.

-- maybe some rain or snow. we get about 10 miles per hour. overnight, we expect rain to changing to snow. you might get an inch to the north near the pennsylvania line. this could look very much like the thursday night/friday morning deal with slippery driving conditions. watch the insta-weather futurecast. the first wave comes in tonight. that is out of here by 3:00 a.m. or so, but we are not done. there will be a second shot coming through as coastal development occurs offshore, and that might throw snow our way, so if this model is correct, we could get snow saturday afternoon before things pull out of the picture and we dry out. potentially, if the second development occurs on the

afternoon saturday, there is an inch of snow up to the maryland line and a dusting elsewhere. the second wave comes in, and heavier accumulations could be on the eastern shore in the baltimore area. we are not sure how this will play out, but there is the potential for couple of shots of snow. late tonight, something coming in, but a high of 57 today. saturday, the chance for accumulating snow, mostly like. the six is the high. snow showers sunday, cold, and still in the 30's into presidents' day. >> congress goes home today leaving unfinished business behind. billions in automatic spending cuts are scheduled to happen as soon as they come back. tracie potts is on capitol hill with what could happen if congress fails to make quick decisions. >> in chicago today, president
